RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State Athletics Department has provided a series of valuable guest speakers for the benefit of its student-athletes. The Wolfpack Leadership Academy Speaker Series debuted on August 18 at the annual Welcome Back Pack Dinner, held on campus at the McKimmon Center.
Chris Herren, former NBA player and addiction recovery advocate who was featured on the ESPN Films 30 for 30 series "Unguarded," kicked off the series on Aug. 18. On the evening of Aug. 19, NC State student-athletes were treated to a course entitled "Money Management & Financial Literacy" in the ballroom at the brand new Talley Student Center.
The series continued on Dec. 6 when ESPN College GameDay host, Heisman Trophy winner, and Super Bowl MVP Desmond Howard came to town.
Additional speakers are planned for the Spring of 2016. Among those will be: Felicia Hall Allen in January and Clint Bruce in April. Allen is a former Big Ten champion, a former WNBA team executive and current attorney who shares her insight on becoming a leader. Bruce is a former Navy Seal, Naval Academy football captain and NFL player who talks about pursing elite leadership on the ball field, battlefield, and in the boardroom.
Mindy Sopher—an NC State faculty member from the Department of Communication and Exploratory Studies—has been available to student-athletes throughout the duration of the Wolfpack Leadership Academy to provide teams with interactive leadership development sessions on team building, ethical leadership, conflict resolution, appreciating differences, and clear communication.
