Hill takes first in the 5,000m at the USA Championships
EUGENE, Ore. – Ryan Hill, former Wolfpack standout and current member of the Bowerman Track Club, finished first in the senior men's 5,000m race at the USATF Outdoor Championships Sunday, June 28. Hill crossed the finish line in 13:50.69 to claim the national title and his place on Team USA for the IAAF World Outdoor Championships, which is set for Aug. 22-30 in Beijing.
The Hickory, N.C., native ran the majority of the race in the front group. He fell to fourth place as the lead pack came around the final straightaway. In the final 100m, Hill made his way to the outside lane, closed down on the race's leaders and sprinted past them to claim the win. Behind his strong kick, he ran the final lap of the race in 54.59 seconds.
From 2009-2013, Hill was a force on the track for NC State. He set school records in the 1,500m, 3,000m and 5,000m races. He is also a 10-time All-American and seven-time ACC Champion.
In 2013, Hill was awarded the USTFCCCA South Region Track Athlete of the Year and the ACC Men's Track Performer of the Year during the indoor season.
The qualifying round of the 5,000m at the World Outdoor Championships is slated for Tuesday, Aug. 25.
