Former Wolfpack standout honored as top softball student-athlete in the conference
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Nearly a month after graduating, Emily Weiman, formerly of the NC State softball team, continues to collect accolades as she was named the ACC Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Tuesday according to an announcement by the conference office.
Â
Weiman becomes the first Wolfpack player to garner the award since it was established in the fall of 2007. The award recognizes the top student-athlete in the ACC in a respective sport and candidates must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Â
The Pasadena, Md., native finished her academic career with a 3.818 grade point average and also earns her fourth consecutive selection to the All-ACC Academic Team by receiving the award. She is one of just two players on the team to have earned the honor in each of her four years as a student-athlete.
Â
She enjoyed a very successful career at NC State and departs as the program record holder in career wins (108), appearances (195), games started (167), complete games (128) and innings pitched (1,084.7).
Â
In addition, Weiman owns single season school records in wins (33), appearances (54), games started (52), complete games (42), shutouts (12), innings pitched (323.1) and strikeouts (322).
Â
The former Pack pitcher graduated in May with a degree in sport management and is currently playing professional softball for the Pennsylvania Rebellion of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) softball league.
Â
Rising senior Lana Van Dyken was also selected to the All-ACC Academic Team, collecting her second consecutive mention on the team. The native of Puyallup, Wash., owns a 3.553 GPA as a biological sciences major.
Â
She started all 60 games for the Pack last season at third base and recorded a batting average of .302 against conference opponents. Van Dyken also drew 36 walks on the year to finish second on the squad in that category.
Â
To be eligible for consideration on the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
