NC State baseball dropped an 8-2 decision at No. 4 TCU on Sunday night at Lupton Stadium in the winners' bracket of the Fort Worth Regional.
The Wolfpack (36-22) suffers only its fourth loss in the last 19 contests. All four of those losses have come against competition ranked inside the top 10. NC State's last loss to an unranked opponent came April 21 at ECU. The Pack's last loss to a team that did not make the NCAA Tournament field came April 11 at North Carolina.
TCU (46-12) has lost one home game in its last 19 tries, with that defeat coming at the hands of the Wolfpack. Prior to that, the Horned Frogs last home loss happened on March 22 against Oklahoma State.
Frog starter Tyler Alexander took a perfect game into the seventh, broken up when Logan Ratledge reached on an error to leadoff the inning. Andrew Knizner spoiled the no-hit bid as the next batter, on a single through the right side. The Pack scored once in the inning to trim its deficit to 6-1, but could have had more, leaving two stranded. Ratledge's solo shot to start the ninth, his 10th homer and 40th RBI of the season, narrowed the margin to 8-2. Ryne Willard provided State's only other hit in a 1-for-3 effort.
Wolfpack starter Ryan Williamson (4-4) took the loss on 2 2/3 innings. Cory Wilder worked the next six in relief, his second-longest outing of the year behind a seven inning effort against Florida State on April 2. Wilder threw 111 pitches to preserve the Pack bullpen for Monday's championship game, allowing three earned on five hits with seven punchouts. Evan Mendoza faced one batter in the ninth, inducing a pop to right to end the frame.
NC State returns to action Monday night at 8:05 PM ET on ESPN3 for the Regional Championship. Radio coverage will be handled by 99.9 The Fan and 88.1 WKNC. Fans can follow along with live stats from GoPack.com, or Twitter updates from @NCStateBaseball.
