The NC State women's golf team has home course advantage this weekend as it hosts the NCAA Raleigh Regional at Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
This weekend's action will mark the 13th time in 14 years the Wolfpack has advanced to NCAA Regional play. Last season's squad placed third at the NCAA East Regional in Florida and advanced to the NCAA Championship in Tulsa, Okla. Led by a school-record round on the final day, the Pack tied for 10th overall.
The weekend shakes up as an interesting one for NC State, which will be playing on a course senior Lindsay McGetrick says "we play probably twice a week." Managing the balance of playing at home while also keeping its competition routine is part of the challenge this week. The team, like the rest of the field, will be staying in a hotel in downtown Raleigh. Yet, the Pack clearly has an advantage by knowing the lay of the land.
"It's nice to know you're going to be familiar with where everything is," head coach Page Marsh said. "That's a great sense of comfort."
McGetrick added: "We know we can play well on this course, but we can't get ahead of ourselves or get frustrated if we're not playing well. We need to relax and put ourselves in the mindset that we're playing in any other tournament."
McGetrick is the team's leading scorer and will play in the No. 3 position. She has five career top-10 finishes, including four this year. Freshman Cecily Overbey will be playing in the No. 1 spot. Overbey is coming off her best collegiate tournament, a 17th-place finish at the ACC Championship that featured a round of 69 on the first day.
Rachael Taylor will start at No. 2, Vivian Tsui is in the No. 4 spot and Stephanie Pribonic will start at No. 5.
The 18-team tournament features 13 teams ranked in the top 50 of the GolfStat.com rankings, including seven of the top 30. NC State is ranked No. 42 in the country, according to GolfStat.com.
The top six teams and top three individuals from each of the four regional sites will advance to the NCAA Championship at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla., May 22-27. In addition to Raleigh, the other three regional sites are: South Bend, Ind., St. George, Utah, and San Antonio, Texas.
