NC State baseball's nine-game winning streak came sputtering to a halt at the hands of No. 2 Louisville, who escaped with a 4-3 win on Thursday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack (30-19, 14-13 ACC) loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning against highly-touted Louisville starter Kyle Funkhouser, but could not drive in the game's first run. Instead, the Cardinals (41-13, 24-4) scored a pair in the top second to take control.
Chance Shepard knotted the score 2-2 in the fourth on a two-run blast to right, his fifth homer of the year, scoring Joe Dunand. Louisville answered with one in the fifth and another in the seventh. Dunand contributed again in the seventh with an RBI single ripped through the right side to score Bubby Riley from second. Riley gave State a chance to tie in the bottom ninth with a two-out single up the middle, but a strikeout ended the comeback bid, setting the final margin at 4-3.
Dunand and Riley provided the Pack's only multi-hit outings, each going 2-for-5 and a run, Dunand chipping in the aforementioned RBI. Logan Ratledge delivered his 18th double of the year to lead off the first. Andrew Knizner doubled in a 1-for-5 effort. Chance Shepard homered for his only hit in a 1-for-3 evening with two RBIs and a run. Brock Deatherage and Jake Fincher each singled.
Wolfpack starter Cory Wilder left after 1 2/3 innings, striking out a pair with two earned. Ryan Williamson worked the next 2 2/3, allowing one earned on two hits and four walks. Joe O'Donnell (7-4) took the loss on 3 1/3, limiting the Cards to one unearned run on two hits and a walk, punching out four. Travis Orwig retired two of three batters faced. Jon Olczak recorded the final two outs on a strikeout-throwout at third.
NC State returns to action on Friday at 6:30 PM for game two of the series on ESPN3. Radio duties will be handled by 88.1 WKNC. Fans can follow along with live stats from GoPack.com, or Twitter updates via @NCStateBaseball.
