Wolfpack Drops Doubleheader to No. 8 Florida State

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The NC State softball team dropped a pair of games against the eighth-ranked Florida State Seminoles Friday evening at Dail Stadium. The Seminoles edged the Wolfpack in game one, 6-5, and defeated the Pack in the second game, 10-1.
The Wolfpack falls to 21-15 and 6-5 in ACC play, while the Noles improve to 33-8 and 13-1 in conference action.
Quick Hits (Game One)
- Florida State struck first in game one with three unearned runs in the top of the third, following a costly miscue by the Wolfpack with the bases loaded to extend the inning.
- The Seminoles added another run to their total in the fourth on an RBI-groundout by Alex Powers, which allowed Jessica Warren to score from third base to make it 4-0 in favor of FSU.
- NC State responded in a big way in the fourth inning with five runs to take a 5-4 lead. Junior Lana Van Dyken walked with the bases loaded to the plate the first run of the contest for the Wolfpack and senior Renada Davis followed with a grand slam to give the Wolfpack the lead.
- The lead was short-lived; however, as the Noles scored two runs in the top of the fifth and held on to earn a 6-5 win. A couple of RBI walks in the frame helped Florida State score the two runs.
Quick Hits (Game Two)
- NC State wasted little time scoring in game two, as the squad plated a run in its first plate appearance thanks to an RBI-single from sophomore Tyler Ross.
- Van Dyken reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second base on a passed ball to move into scoring position for Ross' single to center field to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 advantage.
- Florida State had a couple of big innings in the third and fourth to take a 7-1 lead. The Seminoles scored three runs in the third and four in the fourth. The Noles tacked on three additional runs in the sixth to extend the lead to 10-1.
Inside the Box Score
- Davis paced the Wolfpack at the plate in game one with a 3-for-4 performance, highlighted by a grand slam and a game-high four RBI. Senior Sara Lippard had the other hit in the contest for NC State.
- Freshman Meredith Burroughs was 2-for-3 in the second game of the twin bill to lead the Pack, while Ross also had a hit in the game.
In the Pitcher's Circle
- Senior Emily Weiman started in the circle in game one and pitched the first four innings, before giving way to sophomore Courtney Mirabella. Weiman struck out five batters and only allowed one run, while Mirabella suffered the loss in three innings pitched and two earned runs allowed.
- Weiman also started game two of the doubleheader and pitched the first 3.2 innings, prior to Mirabella relieving her in the fourth. Mirabella threw 1.1 innings and freshman Harli Hubbard tossed the final inning.
On Deck
The Wolfpack will return to action on Saturday for the series finale against No. 8 Florida State. The contest will be NC State's annual Kay Yow Pink Game Presented by Rex Healthcare, as the Pack will wear pink uniform tops and accessories. First pitch is slated for noon at Dail Stadium.
