Wolfpack Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. -- The NC State softball team won both games of a doubleheader against Coastal Carolina Wednesday afternoon at CCU Softball Stadium. The Wolfpack earned an 8-3 win in game one and shut out the Chanticleers in the second game of the day, 7-0. 
State improves to 21-13 on the year, while Coastal falls to 18-17.
Quick Hits (Game One)
- NC State plated the first run of the contest in the top of the second, following an RBI-double by freshman Meredith Burroughs. Sophomore Tyler Ross singled and stole second base prior to Burroughs' at-bat to score on the play and make it 1-0 in favor of the Wolfpack.
- Senior Renada Davis gave the Pack a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning, when she crushed a two-run homer to left field. Junior Lana Van Dyken started the frame with a single and scored on Davis' sixth round-tripper of the season.
- Coastal Carolina countered in the bottom of the sixth with three runs to knot the score at three. Kelsey Dominik had an RBI-single in the frame, while Sara Rasley delivered the big hit with a two-RBI double to right center, which tied the game, 3-3.
- The Wolfpack responded in the top of the seventh by batting around in the lineup and scoring five runs to take an 8-3 lead. Sophomore Molly Hutchison had a two-RBI single in the frame, while senior Sara Lippard was hit-by-pitch to bring in another run to extend the Pack advantage to 6-3.
- With the bases loaded, sophomore Hannah Yeager cranked a two-run double to left center, which allowed Burroughs and junior Maggie Hawkins to cross the plate to extend the lead to 8-3.
Quick Hits (Game Two)
- Burroughs broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run in the top of the second to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead. It was her seventh homer of the season.
- In the third inning, Hawkins ripped an RBI-double to left center to score Ross who singled and stole second base earlier in the frame to move into scoring position.
- The Wolfpack broke the game open in the top of the fifth with five runs, all of which were scored with two outs in the inning. Yeager drove in the first run of the frame with an RBI-single to left field, which scored Hawkins from second base.
- Van Dyken walked to load the bases and Davis delivered a two-RBI single to left center, plating senior Sara Lippard and Yeager on the play. Freshman Alyssa Compton was hit-by-pitch to load the bases once again and Hutchison slapped a two-RBI single to center field, scoring Davis and Van Dyken, as the Wolfpack opened up a 7-0 advantage.
- Coastal managed just one hit in the second game and did not have a runner get past second base.
Inside the Box Score
- Davis led the Wolfpack at the plate in game one with a 3-for-4 performance, highlighted by a two-run home run, two runs batted in (RBI) and two runs scored. Hawkins was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Burroughs, Compton, Hutchison, Ross, Van Dyken and Yeager each had one hit.
- In game two, Hawkins was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, while Burroughs and Yeager were both 2-for-3 each with an RBI and a run scored. Compton, Davis, Hutchison, Lippard and Van Dyken had one hit apiece in the contest.
In the Pitcher's Circle
- Senior Emily Weiman started both games of the doubleheader in the circle for the Wolfpack and collected the win in both contests to run her record to 16-9 on the year. In game one, she went the distance in the circle and struck out 10 batters, while walking two and allowing two earned runs.
- She pitched the first five innings of game two before giving way to sophomore Courtney Mirabella. Weiman had a no-hitter through the first three innings, prior to a bloop single ending the bid in the bottom of the fourth.
- Weiman struck out eight batters, allowed just one hit and walked two. Mirabella threw two scoreless and hitless innings to complete the one-hit shutout. She had two strikeouts and walked one.
Game Notes
- With victories in both games of the twin bill, State now leads the all-time series against Coastal, 12-2.
- Davis extended her program-best reached base safely streak to 24 by collecting a hit in both contests. She also moved into second place in ACC history for career home runs with her 56th round-tripper.
- Hutchison also stretched her reached base safely streak to 15, while Compton saw her 16 game streak come to a close in game one.
On Deck
The Wolfpack will return to action at home this weekend when the squad plays host to ACC foe Florida State. Due to the Easter Holiday, the teams will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 5 p.m. and a single game on Saturday at noon to avoid playing on Sunday. Saturday's contest will be the annual Kay Yow Pink Game presented by Rex Healthcare.
