Smoldering from a mistake-filled series opener, NC State baseball utilized the power of the deep ball to thrash Clemson 8-3 on Saturday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack (8-4, 1-1 ACC) cranked four homers on the afternoon, boosting the tally to six for the weekend. In two games against Clemson, the Pack's belted more than 20% of its team home run total from 2014.
Logan Ratledge supplied two, his second and third of the year. The senior blasted a two-run bomb in the first and three-run tater in the second, setting a new career high with five RBIs. Ratledge's two homer day is the second of his career, the previous coming February 19, 2014 against North Carolina A&T.
Curt Britt (2-0) earned the win by denying the Clemson (8-5, 1-1) comeback effort that began with two runs in the fourth and continued with one in the fifth. Britt mowed down nine in a row from the sixth to the eighth, finishing with five punchouts.
Brian Brown started and lasted three innings, holding the Tigers to two earned on five hits and three walks with one strikeout. Tommy DeJuneas closed the final 2/3, striking out the first batter he faced. DeJuneas has not allowed a hit through the first eight innings of his college career.
Ryne Willard smashed his first homer in Wolfpack red to extend the Pack lead to 4-0 in the first. The junior transfer moved to designated hitter and contributed a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs and a run. Brock Deatherage manned the top of the order, going 2-for-4 with two runs and a walk.
Jake Fincher returned to the lineup and added a 2-for-4 day with a run and a triple. Jake Armstrong went 2-for-3 with a double, one run, and a walk. Andrew Knizner granted the Wolfpack an insurance run with a solo shot in the seventh.
