PITTSBURGH - The NC State softball team found it difficult to get acclimated to the frigid temperatures at Vartabedian Field on Sunday, as the squad dropped an 11-4 decision to the Pitt Panthers.
The Wolfpack falls to 16-11 on the year and 4-2 in ACC play, while the Panthers improve to 24-7 and 6-3 in league action.
Quick Hits
- The Wolfpack had a tough day in the field, as nine of the 11 runs Pitt scored were unearned.
- Pitt broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second with seven runs, but managed just three hits in the frame. Four errors by the Pack defense kept the inning alive, allowing the Panthers to score additional runs.
- State countered in the top of the third with three runs to trim the deficit to 7-3. Sophomore Molly Hutchison smacked a 2-run blast to right center to score classmate Tyler Ross who singled earlier in the inning.
- Senior Renada Davis scored prior to Hutchison's homer on a wild pitch for the first run of the game for the Pack.
- In the bottom of the inning, Pitt answered with three runs to extend the lead to 10-3 following a homer by Jenna Modic. An error on the previous play would have ended the inning and as a result, all three runs were unearned.
- NC State threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with one out but was only able to get one run out of it. A double play hit hard to the third baseman, who fired to first base to complete the 5-3 double play ended the rally.
- Pitt added a run in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by McKayla Taylor.
In the Pitcher's Circle
- Senior Emily Weiman started the contest for the Wolfpack and pitched the first 1.2 innings before giving way to sophomore Courtney Mirabella in the second, who pitched the remainder of the contest. Combined, the two pitchers only allowed two earned runs.
Inside the Box Score
- Davis and sophomore Hannah Yeager paced the Pack at the plate, each with 2-for-3 performances. Alyssa Compton, Hutchison, Ross and Lana Van Dyken each had one hit in the contest.
Game Notes
- Davis extended her reached base safely streak to 17 games in the contest, which ties as the most in program history. Compton has reached base safely in 11 consecutive games.
- Despite losing the game, the Wolfpack outhit the Panthers, 8-7.
- Yeager also stretched her hitting streak to eight games with a single up the middle in the game.
On Deck
The Wolfpack will return to action on Wednesday when it makes the trip to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on USC Upstate. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3 p.m. at Cyril Stadium.
