Logan Ratledge became the first Wolfpacker in nine years to sock three doubles in a game, including two in the decisive 15th inning, as NC State outlasted Boston College 9-4 on Saturday in Northborough.
NC State (12-9, 3-5 ACC) wriggled out of three bases loaded jams in a row on its way to the 15th, when Ratledge led off with his second double of the game. After scoring the go-ahead run, Ratledge returned to the plate during the six-run rally to knock in a pair of insurance runs, and mark the first Wolfpacker to hit three doubles in a game since Aaron Cone pulled the feat on March 15, 2006 against UNC Greensboro.
Boston College (6-13, 1-7) loaded the bases in the eighth, ninth, and 10th, but came up empty each time. Joe O'Donnell (2-0) entered with two outs in the ninth, and survived during the diciest moment, a bases-loaded one-out situation in the 10th, by inducing a bouncer to third that Joe Dunand turned 5-4-3. O'Donnell claimed the win on 6 1/3 innings, holding the Eagles to one unearned run in the 15th on two hits and four walks with six punchouts. The six strikeouts matched a career high, set in O'Donnell's debut performance at Elon on February 18, 2014, and the 6 1/3 surpass his previous high of four set at Clemson on April 7, 2014.
Preston Palmeiro went 4-for-6 with a run and an RBI. Jake Fincher and Jake Armstrong provided one double each, with Fincher scoring twice. Joe Dunand returned to the lineup and went 2-for-6 with a run and an RBI. Ryne Willard provided the breakthrough hit, a two-RBI single to left in the top 15th. Andrew Knizner drove in a pair to give the Pack a 3-2 lead in the top third.
Brian Brown started and worked the first four innings, holding BC to three earned on seven hits. Tommy DeJuneas relieved him with 3 2/3 innings of shutout ball on two hits and a walk, fanning two. Jon Olczak and Will Gilbert combined to work one hitless inning between the eighth and ninth.
With the score tied 3-3 following the third, State fought through 11 scoreless innings with Boston College constantly threatening to end the game and throwing their Sunday starter. The tie finally broke in the 15th.
Ratledge started the inning with a double to center on a full count. Palmeiro singled through the right side next, putting runners on the corners with nobody out. A grounder to short marked the first out and left Ratledge planted at third. Shane Shepard drew an intentional walk in a pinch hit situation to load the bases. Willard's two-RBI single to center made it 5-3. Dunand pushed Shepard home on a single through the right side. With two away, Fincher reached on a dropped infield pop to keep the inning alive and score Willard. Brock Deatherage drew a five-pitch walk, which set up Ratledge's second double of the inning to drive in a pair. Boston College appealed that the third runner missed third base, and the umpires awarded the third out to end the six-run rally.
The outing was the longest game NC State has played since a 17-inning win in the 2013 Super Regional against Rice. The last 15 inning game in Wolfpack history happened on May 26, 2011 against Georgia Tech.
NC State returns to the diamond at Noon on Sunday for the rubber match with Boston College. Radio coverage will be provided by 88.1 WKNC. Fans can also follow along with live stats on GoPack.com, or Twitter updates via @NCStateBaseball.
