NC State trimmed its deficit on Preston Palmeiro's ninth-inning homer, but fell short, 7-3 on Tuesday night at UNC Greensboro.

The Wolfpack (10-8) took a 1-0 lead in the first, before posting seven scoreless innings to follow, while allowing the Spartans (7-10) to race out to a 7-1 lead with a four-run fourth and two in the eighth. Palmeiro's two-run jack made it manageable with nobody out, but State couldn't find a finishing kick, falling 7-3.

Palmeiro led the way with all three RBIs in a 2-for-5 outing with a run. Logan Ratledge scored twice, including the game's first run, after hitting his first triple of the year, part of a 2-for-4 night with two runs and a walk. Ryne Willard contributed his third double of the year in a 1-for-5 perofrmance. Jake Armstrong and Chance Shepard accounted for the Pack's other two hits.

Wolfpack starter Ryan Williamson (0-1) claimed the loss on five earned over two innings. Evan Mendoza relieved him and went the distance, finishing with three strikeouts in a career-high six innings of work, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and four walks.
