GREENSBORO- N.C. - NC State would never trail en route to an opening #STATEment 81-70 victory over Pitt Wednesday night in the second round of the ACC Tournament.
Anthony 'Cat' Barber and Trevor Lacey combined to score 55 points to lead the Wolfpack into the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament.
Barber led the way for State during the first half, going 4-for-4 from behind the arc and 6-for-9 from the floor. He finished the game with a career-high 34 points. The total is the fourth-highest scoring total in an ACC Tournament game in Wolfpack history and the most since David Thompson scored 38 against Virginia in the 1975 tournament.
Despite battling foul trouble for much of the contest, Lacey finished the game with 21 points and five assists, while BeeJay Anya, Ralston Turner and Lennard Freeman led rebounding efforts with six boards each.
Gott Said It: "The biggest thing was Cat's speed. I thought they had trouble containing him and stopping his penetration. And then we got ahead and they tried to press us. At that point it becomes really difficult to contain Cat. So, great win. I thought collectively, everybody played well. So we're excited about it."
"I think we've gained some confidence. We have gotten better defensively. When we inserted Freeman back into the lineup at Louisville, it gave us a better defensive team on the floor, and I think that has helped our team."
"Our team is beginning to gel.I think we can improve a lot still, but we are playing some good basketball right now."
Pitt would cut the lead to singles digits on multiple occasions in the second half, but the Pack would hold off the Panthers and improve to 20-12 on the season.
FINAL: Wolfpack 81, Pitt 70. On to play Duke! #PackMadness
