BLACKSBURG, VA. - Freshman Nicky Hall recorded a major decision and defending NCAA Champion Nick Gwiazdowski pinned a top-10 foe, but it was not enough as the Wolfpack (14-5, 1-2 ACC) fell at #9 Virginia Tech 29-9 Sunday afternoon.
The Pack ending up splitting its road duals this weekend, starting its road trip with a 21-15 win at #17 Old Dominion Friday night.
Today’s ACC dual started at 133 pounds, as Virginia Tech’s five of their first six wrestlers ranked 16th or better nationally, four in the top-10. The Hokies (12-2, 3-0 ACC) took advantage and won each of those first six bouts, but not without some controversy.
At the end of the 149 punned match, the ref awarded a reversal to the Pack’s Sam Melikian, which would have given him the win over #9 Sal Mastriani. But it was reversed after review and no points awarded to Melikian, and in addition to the Hokies wining the bout 7-6, the Pack was deducted a team point.
The Pack’s first win of the day came at 184 pounds with freshman Nicky Hall earning a 10-2 major decision over Brooks Morrison. Hall scored a late takedown in the third period and with riding time, was able to pull off his fifth straight win of the year.
Defending NCAA Champion Nick Gwiazdowski continued his undefeated season, as his third-period pin (5:24) of #7 Ty Walz pushes his season record to a perfect 25-0, and his school record winning streak to 45. Gwizadowski recorded his 11th pin of the season, including fourth straight, and he improves to 9-0 versus ranked foes this year, including 3-0 versus top-10 foes.
Up Next: The Pack will return to home action on Saturday, Feb. 14 when NC State hosts ACC foe Pittsburgh at 7:30 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum. The night will be the Pack’s Beauty & the Beast event along side the NC State gymnastics team. Admission will be $5 for adults, under 17 and NC State students are free.
