NC State Softball Defeats Memphis; Falls to No. 19 LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. – The NC State softball team picked up a 9-3 win against the Memphis Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Park, but lost the second game of the day to No. 19 LSU, 7-0. The Wolfpack moves to 2-2 on the season, while Memphis is 1-2 and LSU improves to 4-0.
Quick Hits (Game One vs. Memphis)
- The Wolfpack used a strong effort at the plate and in the field to secure a 9-3 win against Memphis in the first contest of the day for the squad.
- Senior Renada Davis opened the game with a single and scored on the first home run of the season by the Pack from junior Maggie Hawkins, as NC State took a 2-0 lead.
- Molly Hutchison, a sophomore from San Diego, Calif., extended the Wolfpack’s lead to 4-0 in the top of the third with a two-run blast over the left field fence. The sophomore smacked her second homer of the contest in her next at-bat in the fifth, a solo shot to deep center field to make it 5-3.
- NC State added two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to win by the final tally of 9-3.
- Memphis got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a three-run homer by Calli Irvin.
Quick Hits (Game Two vs. No. 19 LSU)
- The Tigers struck first in the contest on a solo homer in the bottom of the second by Allie Walljasper. LSU added three more runs in the third inning, following an error and a two-run home run from Bianka Bell.
- NC State looked to mount a comeback in the top of the fifth after a walk by Meredith Burroughs and a single by Tyler Ross, but LSU’s pitcher Allie Walljasper escaped the jam.
- LSU scored a run in the fifth inning and two additional runs in the sixth to make it 7-0.
In the Pitcher’s Circle
- Senior Emily Weiman started in the circle against Memphis for the Wolfpack and pitched 6.2 innings to earn her first win of the season. The Pasadena, Md., native struck out five batters and only allowed three earned runs.
- Courtney Mirabella, a sophomore from Bradenton, Fla., got the nod in the second game and pitched all six innings, striking out six batters.
Inside the Box Score
- Hutchison and classmate Hannah Yeager paced the Pack at the plate against Memphis each with 3-for-4 performances. Davis had two hits in the game, while Burroughs, Alyssa Compton, Hawkins, Ross and Lana Van Dyken each had one hit in a 13-hit output for the Wolfpack.
- Against LSU, Ross led NC State at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing. Davis and Hutchison each had one hit in the contest.

NC State will return to action on Sunday, when it plays No. 19 LSU again before returning to Raleigh later in the evening. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
