GREENSBORO, N.C. - NC State senior Joe DeAngelo was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week after a pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents, including a crucial win in the Wolfpack's 22-20 upset of 13th-ranked Virginia last Thursday night.
With Virginia leading 20-19 and heading into the 125-pound competition, which was the final match of night, DeAngelo decisioned 29th-ranked Nick Herrman of Virginia, 7-6, to give the Wolfpack a 22-20 win over the Cavaliers. The win by DeAngelo snaped UVa's 32-match home winning streak.
The victory allowed NC State to finish second in the ACC in the regular season, its highest finish since 2007.
Then, on senior night in Raleigh on Saturday, DeAngelo defeated the Eddie Klimara of Oklahoma State, 3-2. Klimara is the nation's eighth-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds. Since Jan. 7 of this year, DeAngelo has won 11 of his last 13 matches, losing only to the second-ranked (Alan Waters, Missouri) and fourth-ranked (Joey Dance, Virginia Tech) wrestlers in the nation. He has won his last three matches, all against nationally-ranked opponents, and his last four matches against ranked foes overall.
The wins for DeAngelo boosted his record this year to 15-9 and 13-7 in dual matches. He finished 4-1 in ACC competition this year. DeAngelo climbed to No. 18 nationally at 125 pounds according to TheOpenMat.com this week.
DeAngelo is the third Wolfpack wrestler to be named the ACC Wrestler of the Week. Nick Gwiazdowski was named the first week of the award on Dec. 17, and last week freshman Michael Boykin was honored.
