RALEIGH – The NC State men's basketball team defeated Northeastern 72-66 on Tuesday night inside PNC Arena. The Wolfpack earned its sixth straight win and improved to 10-3 overall on the season.
Key Stats: Anthony 'Cat' Barber, the leading scorer in the ACC, led the Wolfpack with 29 points, five rebounds and three assists. Maverick Rowan also provided the Pack with an offensive spark, scoring 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting. The freshman went 4-for-8 from behind the arc.
Abdul-Malik Abu recorded his third straight double-double. Abu scored 10 points and added 12 rebounds. The sophomore has now grabbed at least nine rebounds in his last six games.
After holding a 27-25 lead at halftime, the Pack picked up on its shooting in the second half, shooting a blistering 62.1 percent from the floor. NC State finished the night 7-for-14 from 3-point range and shot a higher free throw percentage than Northeastern (8-5).
Turning Point: With 4:07 remaining in the game, Northeastern tied the game at 57. The Pack responded with an 8-0 run led by strong 3-point shooting. NC State scored back-to-back 3-pointers, as Rowan and Caleb Martin each connected from deep to give NC State a 63-57 lead. Abu added a tip-in on the next trip down the floor to give NC State a 65-57 lead with 2:42 left in the game. The Pack would go on to ice the game with free throws and defensive stops down the stretch.
Gott Said It: "I liked a lot of things about tonight. We beat a good basketball team, Northeastern is a proven team from last year. They have veteran players and tonight was a nice win for our team. In the second half, I feel like we executed our offense better, we shot a high percentage. I think we missed a lot of open shots and shots around the rim early in the game. Our guys showed poise and settled down in the second half. Cat was terrific again, it is becoming a thing where he has 29 points and its not a big deal anymore. But it is a big deal because he is playing so well. It is nice to see Maverick hit some shots and Caleb hit two big threes for us. Defensively, our guys had active hands, which led to some deflections and in the second half we needed them. Overall it was a good night."
