RALEIGH – Behind Anthony 'Cat' Barber's career-high 37 points, the NC State men's basketball team moved past Winthrop 87-79 on Friday night. The Wolfpack won the rebounding battle and outscored the Eagles in the paint 38-20 on its way to the fourth win of the season.
Key Stats: In addition to the career high, Barber added eight assists and shot 19-for-22 from the free throw line. The point guard dominated late in the game, scoring the team's final 10 points and 22 of the Pack's 47 second-half points.
Maverick Rowan added 17 points and has scored in double figures in each of his six career college games. Caleb Martin reached double digits with 11 points. Lennard Freeman was a point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
BeeJay Anya recorded his 153rd career block, which moves the junior to second on NC State's all-time block list. The school record is 207, held by Thurl Bailey
Jimmy Gavin of Winthrop scored 38 points in the contest. Gavin shot 7-of-12 from behind the arc and added 11 free throws. The last time NC State allowed an opposing player to score at least 30 points was Feb. 26, 2014 after Marcus Paige scored 35 in PNC Arena. Gavin's 38-point total was also the most for an opposing player against the Wolfpack since 1979.
Turning Point: With NC State leading 80-75, Barber made one of two at the line and buried a pull-up jumper at the 1:33 mark to give the Wolfpack an 83-75 lead. Barber scored 12 of the team's final 14 points. On six of the team's final eight possessions, Barber slashed his way through the lane and either scored a layup or made free throws to pull away from the Eagles.
Gott Said It: "I have a hard time thinking that we're going to play against anyone that is as offensively dangerous as Jimmy Gavin. Wow. I thought Cody and Caleb in the second half – we challenged them to guard he and Johnson- I thought they did a good job. They made it hard for Gavin to get shots up. I'm still amazed at his performance. So I'm proud of our team. That's a good team. I have a feeling that if they stay healthy, we'll be watching them play championship week in their conference. They've got a guy that transferred from a Division II school, nobody knows who he is. And the next thing you know he can play like that. Cat was terrific, just spectacular, like he has been every night. I thought Maverick made big shots, Cody and Caleb defensively did great, BeeJay had some great defensive plays where he protected the basket and blocked some shots. Tough win for us against a pretty good basketball team."
Up Next: NC State will be back in action Tuesday night at PNC Arena in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge against Michigan. The game is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN2. The game is also NC State's Toys For Tots game. Fans are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy to the arena.
