BROOKLYN, N.Y. - In a match-up against the top-rated player in the 2015 college basketball class, it was the NC State Wolfpack – led by the Martin twins – that stole the show Tuesday night at the Barclays Center. The Pack defeated No. 22/17 LSU in overtime 83-72.
Anthony 'Cat' Barber scored a team-high 20 points in addition to his seven rebounds and seven assists while Caleb Martin contributed 14 points and nine rebounds. Cody Martin earned a double-double, scoring a career high 14 points and adding 10 rebounds. Abdul-Malik Abu also earned a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The victory lifted the Pack to third place and a 3-1 record in the Legends Classic.
Holding Simmons In Check: Ben Simmons, LSU's standout freshman, entered the game with averages of 19.3 points and 14.5 rebounds. He did manage 14 rebounds and 10 assists, but was limited to four points on 1-of-6 shooting.
Turning Point: The Tigers and Wolfpack traded blows for most of the game, but neither was able to pull away from the other. After each team missed opportunities to take the lead in the final seconds, the game went to overtime. Maverick Rowan, who only had three points after regulation, provided the team with the spark that gave the Pack the late edge.
Rowan drilled a 3-pointer to give NC State a four-point lead. After LSU responded with a layup, Rowan grabbed an offensive rebound and then made two ensuing free throws to put NC State up 73-69 with 2:02 remaining. NC State would not give up the lead again, as Barber added four clutch free throws in the closing seconds.
Cat's Classic: Head coach Mark Gottfried called Barber's play in New York "phenomenal." The junior point guard averaged 21.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists in the two games in Brooklyn. His 15 assists came against three turnovers and he also made 24 of his 26 fouls shots in the two games.
Gott Said It: "I'm proud of all of them. I thought these two guys [Caleb and Cody Martin] made some big shots and also defensive plays."
"We're here to win, but we have to learn how to become a good basketball team. We have to learn to make a key defense play or shot and execute at the right time. Tonight we took a big step forward. We're young, but our guys jumped up and did a nice job tonight. We came together as a team a little bit more tonight. That was good for us."
Up Next: The Wolfpack will host Winthrop Friday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. Be sure to check out NC State's BLACK FRIDAY specials leading up to the next home game. Fans who buy a $50 Wolfpack athletics gift card will receive two upper level tickets to the Winthrop game. A purchase of a $100 gift card is good for two lower level tickets for Friday's game.
