CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - NC State had third-ranked Virginia on the ropes in the second half before falling 61-51 Wednesday night at John Paul Jones Arena. Ralston Turner led NC State with 14 points.
Kyle Washington finished with a double-double scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Washington played 24 minutes and went 6-for-11 from the floor. In addition to Turner's 14 points, he also got three rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Trevor Lacey added nine points and three rebounds. State got off to a hot start from behind the arc going 7-for-12 from three in the first half.
A deep 3-pointer at the end of a shot clock by Lacey gave NC State a 42-41 lead with 9:20 to play. Virginia answered with an 10-0 run capped by a Mike Tobey dunk to take the lead for good.
Hot Start: The game couldn't have started better for the Wolfpack, which opened by making its first five shots to lead 14-6. The Pack hit a cold spell after that, but a pair of Turner 3-pointers and two foul shots by Barber cut Virginia's halftime lead to 32-31. Turner had 14 points on 5-for-5 shooting in the first 20 minutes.
Virginia's scoring was evenly distributed as four Cavaliers finished in double figures. They were led by Justin Anderson with a game-high 16 points. Malcolm Brogdon followed with 14 points.
Up Next: The Wolfpack hosts No. 2 Duke Sunday, Jan. 11 at 1:30 p.m. at PNC Arena. The game will be televised nationally on CBS.
