Wolfpack Narrowly Falls to No. 12 Tar Heels, 67-63

RALEIGH - Despite holding the advantage for nearly 33 of 40 minutes, the NC State women's basketball team (12-7, 3-3 ACC) narrowly fell to No. 12 UNC-Chapel Hill by a final score of 67-63 Thursday evening inside Reynolds Coliseum. The game was the 100th all-time meeting between the teams, with NC State now holding a 51-49 advantage.
Len'Nique Brown-Hoskin led the way for the Wolfpack, scoring a game-high 21 points on 8-18 shooting. She was joined in double figures by Dominique Wilson (15 points) and Jennifer Mathurin (11 points). In addition to her 15 points, Wilson grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to record the first double-double of her career.
UNC-CH (17-3, 4-2 ACC) was led by Allisha Gray's double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds), and double-figure scoring performances from Danielle Butts (12) and Stephanie Mavunga (11).
As a team, NC State shot 20-54 (.370) from the field and 8-24 (.333) from distance. UNC-CH went 22-72 (.306) from the field and 6-32 (.188) from three point range.
NC State grabbed the lead early in the first half and never let go of it the entire 20 minutes, holding its largest lead of 13 points with 7:11 to play. The Pack held a 26-16 lead with 3:17 remaining in the opening stanza before going cold from the field, as the Tar Heels ended the half on a 5-0 run to pull within five points (26-21) at the halftime break.
UNC-CH quickly trimmed the Pack's lead to three points (28-25) early in the second half, but NC State would push out to a 35-25 lead with 16:02 to play in the contest. A 14-3 Tar Heels run over the course of the next 3:27 would give the visitors their first lead of the game at 39-38.
The remainder of the contest would see two ties and four lead changes, with the Wolfpack's biggest advantage of the final 10 minutes coming when Mathurin hit a layup down low to make it 49-43 with 8:10 to play. UNC would keep pace, and took the lead for the last time (56-54) with 2:59 remaining.
NC State will return to action when it travels to New York to face No. 23 Syracuse on Jan. 25. Tip-off between the Wolfpack and Orange is set for 3 p.m. from the Carrier Dome. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and these regional networks.
