The Wolfpack (2-5-2, 0-1 ACC) held the Demon Deacons scoreless through the first 82 minutes of the match, but an unfortunate deflection off a Wolfpack defender in the 83rd minute found its way into the back of the net to provide the lone difference in the contest.
The goal came approximately 20 minutes after starting goalkeeper Mackenzie Stelljes was awarded a red card for a challenge on an attacking player outside the penalty, reducing the Pack to ten players for the final 30:47.
“The red card changed the complexion of the game, definitely,” said head coach Tim Santoro. “It was a fairly even game up to that point. Once that happened, it was a matter of defending and adjusting and trying to push it to overtime.”
The teams battled through a scoreless 45 minutes of balanced play. Each side recorded four total shots in the opening half. State tested Wake Forest goalkeeper Lindsay Preston on one occasion—a Dayna Tomayko attempt in the 33rd minute—but she was equal to the task.
“We were pretty sound defensively in the first half,” Santoro added. “Over the course of the final 15 minutes we had a couple of good chances. I thought we managed the game well.”
Wake Forest (3-4-1, 1-0 ACC) stepped up its pressure in the second half, recording 11 total shots. The Wolfpack was able to deflect the pressure for nearly the entirety of the second frame until the Demon Deacons broke through in the 83rd minute. A well-placed cross by Pilar Torres was deflected by the Pack defense into the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
NC State will next be in action at home on Thursday, Sept. 25 against Duke. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Blue Devils is set for 7 p.m. at Dail Soccer Field.
