Despite outshooting the opposition 17-8, NC State (0-1-1) men's soccer fell 3-1 to Cal Poly (1-1) on a blistering hot Sunday afternoon at Dail Soccer Stadium. The Pack drew 857 fans who braved sweltering conditions to cheer on the Pack.
FINDLEY'S REACTION
"We started slow in another home game, which is not something that we're willing to accept," said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. "That's something we need to get better at. We had a couple of bad minutes, gave away two goals, and that changed the game. I thought we responded really well, and played with passion and commitment after that. If we play with that kind of intensity and focus the rest of the way, we can have a really great season."
MOMENTS OF THE MATCH
#PackFooty's shutout streak (including exhibition play) ended at 395 minutes when Cal Poly worked for a 16th minute goal on a pair of crisp passes to set up a header from the left post. Matters went from bad to worse just 56 seconds later. Another quick sequence punctuated by a strike pounded into the left corner to put Cal Poly ahead 2-0.
State responded aggressively, matching the Mustangs shot for shot in the first half (6-6), before pouring on 11 more in the second half to Cal Poly's two. For the second match in a row, the Pack's offense ran into outstanding goalkeeping on the other end. Cal Poly's Wade Hamilton finished the afternoon with nine saves.
Trailing 3-0 after allowing a late goal in the first half, the Wolfpack managed to trim the lead with plenty of time to finish a comeback bid. Michael Bajza drove his way into the Cal Poly interior and drew a foul in the 64th minute, setting up a PK that Bajza easily deposited in the bottom right corner. The Pack fought furiously down the stretch, but couldn't narrow the gap further.
