RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women’s volleyball team will host its annual red and white scrimmage titled the Wolfpack Challenge on tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum to give fans a preview of the 2014 squad.
“We’re excited about the Wolfpack Challenge on Friday,” said head coach Bryan Bunn. “This year’s team is very deep at each position, so there has been a lot of great competition. We’ll get a chance to see a couple different lineups and see where we can get the most out of each player.”
The 2014 team, which consists of 18 players, will be divided into red and white squads and will play a total of four sets. Players on each team will vary by set.
State began its preparations for the 2014 season on Friday, Aug. 8 with the first day of official practice.
What to Watch for…
Heading into his fifth season as the Wolfpack head coach, Bunn’s 2014 squad will be one of the most experienced teams he has had in his tenure at State. The group has five seniors, which is the most Bunn has ever had on a team at NC State.
Also, the Pack returns its statistical leader from a season ago in several categories. Senior Dariyan Hopper led the squad in points and kills with 365.5 and 335, respectively, while classmate Nikki Glass paced the team in service aces with 31. Alston Kearns, a senior from Apex, N.C., recorded the most digs in 2013 with 461.
Highly Touted Freshmen Class
The Wolfpack have six freshmen on the roster and they will challenge for immediate playing time, as well as provide depth for the squad. The group hails from three different U.S. states and also includes an international recruit.
Kaitlyn Kearney and Erica Narel are the middle blockers of the class, while Julia Brown and Perry Ramsey are outside hitters. Emily Harris is the lone passer of the class as a defensive specialist and Julie Varga is a right side hitter.
