Wolfpack to Host Appalachian State in Wednesday Exhibition

RALEIGH – The NC State women’s soccer team takes to the field Wednesday evening in its only exhibition contest of the 2014 season. The Wolfpack will host the Appalachian State Mountaineers at Dail Soccer Field with first kick scheduled for 7 p.m.
A SEASON OF IMPROVEMENT
In just his first season as head coach of the NC State women’s soccer program, Tim Santoro led the Wolfpack to significant improvements in 2013.
State picked up two more wins in 2013 than it did in 2012, earned its first win over a ranked foe since 2009, and improved its end of season RPI mark by 85 places (45 percent) from 188 to 103. The Wolfpack’s season ended with a 2-1 victory over No. 23 Wake Forest. Shortly after this victory, freshman Jackie Stengel earned postseason Atlantic Coast Conference honors (third team and freshman team).
FUTURE IS BRIGHT
Santoro’s first recruiting class at NC State (class of 2014) received notable attention ahead of the 2014 season. BigSoccer and All White Kit ranked State’s current freshman class quite highly, tabbing it as 13th and 19th in the country, respectively.
STENGEL’S SOPHOMORE SEASON
As a freshman in 2013, Jackie Stengel came onto the ACC scene with a bang, leading the Wolfpack in goals (9), points (19), shots (45), and shots on goal (23). Her goal total ranked 10th in the ACC at the end of the regular season.
Stengel scored at least one goal in eight separate games and scored two game-winning goals, one of which came at ACC foe Pittsburgh in the 90th minute.
On August 7, Stengel was named to the second team of the College Sports Madness 2014 ACC Preseason All-Conference Team.
NEW FACES IN THE PACK
NC State welcomes the following nine newcomers to its team for the 2014 season:
Transfers: Alexa Allen (Auburn) and Jenna Kalwa (Penn State).
Freshmen: Cailyn Boch, Mackenzie Graybill, Annah Lindberg, Franziska Jaser, Karina Lacey, Kayla Saager, Dakota Stephens
YOUNG BUT SEASONED
Though only 10 of the 25 student athletes on the team are upperclassmen (juniors or seniors), the Wolfpack returns a significant percentage of its offense from last season. From 2013’s totals, State returns 20 goals (86.9 percent), 50 points (70.4 percent), and 127 shots (71.7 percent).
