BALTIMORE - Former NC State lacrosse standout Stan Cockerton will be inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame as announced Wednesday by the US Lacrosse Board of Directors.
Cockerton is one of eight inductees who will be enshrined on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at The Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley, Md.
A four-time All-American and four-time first-team All-ACC honoree, Cockerton finished his Wolfpack career first all-time in goals per game with 4.39, second all-time in points per game with 6.36 and third all-time in NCAA Division I history with 193 career goals.
Cockerton led the nation in goals his freshman year (1977) with 54 and led the ACC in scoring all four years of his career. He guided State to a 9-4 record and No. 9 national ranking in his sophomore campaign (1978), before taking the Wolfpack to its only NCAA Tournament appearance the following year (1979). NC State fielded a varsity lacrosse team until 1982.
A native of Oshawa, Canada, Cockerton led the Wolfpack to 30 combined wins over his four-year career, including two second-place finishes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He was named Player of the World in 1978 when he led Canada to the lacrosse championship at the World Games. He was also selected to the North-South All-Star game as a senior in 1980 and the ACC's 50th Anniversary Lacrosse Team in 2003.
The summer following his sophomore season, Cockerton had six goals and three assists in Canada's 17-16 victory over Team USA in the FIL World Championship final in 1978, including the game-winning goal in overtime. He participated as a club player for the Oshawa Blue Knights from 1979-95, and played for Team Canada in the FIL World Championship in 1982 and 1990, in addition to 1978.
He has previously been inducted into the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame (1990) and the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame (2003). He served as vice president of the International Lacrosse Foundation (now FIL) from 2003-2012, and now currently serves as president of the Federation of International Lacrosse and executive director of the Ontario Lacrosse Association.
