RALEIGH, N.C. - Following two successful years as an assistant director of strength and conditioning at NC State, Craig Sowers has been promoted to the role of Director of Olympic Sports Training, the athletic department announced on Wednesday.
Prior to his promotion, Sowers assisted in the day-to-day operation of the NC State strength program while directly supervising and coaching men's and women's swimming and diving and women's soccer. Due to a midseason staff change, he also supervised the nationally-ranked women's basketball program for the latter half of the season. In his new role, women's basketball will be added to his coaching duties and he will additionally supervise the administration of all Olympic sport strength and conditioning programs.
"I cannot speak any more highly for someone in my profession than I can for Craig Sowers," said Bob Alejo, NC State's Assistant AD for Strength and Conditioning. "Fortunately for the athletic department, our university, and Wolfpack Nation, he is now the Director of Strength and Conditioning for our Olympic sports.
"The level of respect that is drawn to Coach Sowers by virtue of his elite knowledge, working relationships, and training results, is a model for all strength and conditioning staffs," Alejo added.
"Coach Sowers brings a lot of energy to our program," said NC State women's basketball head coach Wes Moore. "He pushes our student athletes to be their best but does it in such a way that they are excited about investing the necessary time in the weight room. We're looking forward to making great strides from our strength and conditioning areas that will transfer into success on the court."
Sowers came to NC State in the summer of 2012 from his alma mater, Akron. There he was the Director of Strength and Conditioning for the Zips' football program. Prior to his time in Akron, Sowers was an Assistant Head Coach for Athletic Performance at UCLA (2008-11), the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at UTEP (2000-03), an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at UCLA (1996-2000), and a student assistant on Akron's strength and conditioning staff (1993-96).
Outside of college athletics, Sowers also spent four years (2003-07) as the Director of Performance at Velocity Sports Performance locations in Mayfield Village, Ohio, and Irvine, Calif. He also spent a year as the Director of Human Performance for Akron General Sports Performance in 2007.
Sowers earned a B.S. degree in physical education from Akron in 1996 while he was a member of the Zips' football team. He completed a master's degree in kinesiology from UTEP in 2008 and is CSCS, SCCC, and USAW Level I certified.
Sowers and his wife, Lori, have two boys, Bo and Payton.
