State Suffers 5-2 Setback at No. 29 Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 27 NC State men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss against No. 29 Northwestern on Sunday, as the squad completed the road portion of its 2014 non-conference schedule at Combe Tennis Center. State now posts a 9-2 mark on the campaign.
The Wolfpack opened the match by winning the opening doubles point for the eighth time this season with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions. At the No. 2 spot, Sean Weber and Simon Norenius captured an 8-5 win against Sam Shropshire and Alp Horoz. The junior tandem of Austin Powell and Beck Bond sealed the crucial opening point for the Pack with an 8-2 victory against Fedor Baev and Strong Kirchheimer.
At the top position of the lineup, the duo of Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster were leading NU's Raleigh Smith and Mihir Kumar, 7-6, before the match was left unfinished.
In singles, Norenius notched the first win of the day to increase the Wolfpack lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Baev from the No. 5 position in the lineup. Northwestern cut into the State lead with Kumar earning a 6-2, 6-4 from the No. 3 position against Weigel.
The Wildcats tied the score 2-2, as Mudge dropped his match against No. 81 Shropshire from the No. 2 position, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Meanwhile, Weber dropped his match on court four against Kirchheimer, 7-6, 6-2.
The Wildcats clinched the team victory after Bond dropped a hard fought match in a deciding third set, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
In the final match of the day, Powell was defeated in a decisive third set against Smith of Northwestern, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
Up next, the Wolfpack will host Appalachian St. and Winthrop in a doubleheader on Friday, March 7. The match against the Mountaineers will begin at 12 p.m., while the match against the Eagles is set for 5 p.m. first serve.
