RECEIVING VOTES
NC State remains in the national spotlight at the beginning of the 2014-15 campaign, receiving 24 votes in the preseason AP poll and 14 in the preseason USA Today poll.
FIVE QUICK FACTS
NC State returns two starters from a 2013-14 team which won 25 games, was nationally ranked for 12 straight weeks to end the season, and finished fourth in the ACC regular-season standings.
NC State’s two returning seniors are both regular starters and will lead a young group which includes six newcomers (four freshmen and two transfers).
Wes Moore returns in his second year at the helm of the Wolfpack. At the end of the 2013-14 season, he was named ESPNW’s ACC Coach of the Year and was also one of four Naismith Coach of the Year finalists. At 583 career wins, Moore is just 17 victories away from reaching 600 for his career.
Domique Wilson, a redshirt sophomore transfer from Arkansas, will be eligible to play for the Wolfpack in 2014-15. During her freshman season at Arkansas (2012-13), Wilson made 19 starts and played in all 33 games for the Razorbacks, averaging 6.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per contest. She started 14 of the final 15 games of the season and averaged 8.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game during that stretch.
The Wolfpack loses a combined 50.4 points per game (67.1 percent of total offense) due to the graduation of its most recent senior class, a group which included two WNBA Draft picks (Markeisha Gatling and Kody Burke).
THE ELITE 800 CLUB
With a win at Pittsburgh on Feb. 27, 2014, NC State became just the 29th women’s basketball program in NCAA Division I history to achieve 800 all-time wins.
WES IS MOORE
In his first season with the Pack, Moore’s achievements include:
-12 straight weeks in the AP and USA Today top-25 polls.
-First AP top-10 ranking since 2001.
-25 wins
-A 21-3 start to the season, the program’s best such beginning since 1981-82.
-Ten wins over top-100 RPI teams.
-14 wins in 16 home games.
-A double bye in the ACC Tournament.
-A five seed in the NCAA Tournament.
-Two All-ACC selections (Gatling and Burke).
Ready to begin his 26th season as a head coach, Wes Moore’s teams have won 20+ games 21 times. When NC State earned its 25th win of the season on March 7, this marked the 11th time in Moore’s head coaching career when one of his teams has achieved 25 wins or more.
STEPPING IN AS A STARTER
Called into a more prominent role on the team due to a teammate’s injury at the end of the year, Miah Spencer excelled during her freshman season in 2013-14. Over the course of the last six games, the Decatur, Ga., native averaged 14.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. In these six games, she shot 46.9 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range.
THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE REYNOLDS COLISEUM
Since the program’s first season in 1974-75, Reynolds Coliseum has served as a fortress for NC State. The Wolfpack has posted a home record of 417-123 (.772) in 40 seasons in the historic facility.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
-Lenoir-Rhyne posted a 24-7 record during the 2013-14 season, going 17-5 in South Atlantic Conference play.
-The Bears lost in the SAC Tournament final and would then ultimately end last season in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Tournament quarterfinals.
-Lenoir-Rhyne was tabbed third in the SAC women’s basketball preseason coaches poll, released in late October.
-Jazmine Charles and Jenni Gust were both selected to the Preseason All-SAC First Team.
