MOMENTS OF THE MATCH
- Both sides seemed determined not to make the first mistake early, acutely aware of the opportunity presented by a possible ACC Quarterfinal berth. The Pack managed to control possession and keep the Blue Devils (9-8-1, 4-4 ACC) on the retreat for much of the first half, taking a 0-0 tie to the break.
- State struck paydirt in the 50th minute when Matt Ingram's fourth assist of the year found Yanni Hachem for his fourth goal. Ingram caught up to a pass up the right sideline, then crossed to Hachem for the go-ahead header. The Pack would only enjoy that lead for 12:31, when Duke answered in the 62nd on a through ball.
- NC State earned a series of corners down the stretch in regulation, finally connecting on Michael Bajza's fourth assist, headed home by captain and junior midfielder Holden Fender in the 89th minute, scoring his first of the year at the perfect time.
- The jubilation quickly soured, as Duke threw everything it had at the Wolfpack net, and found a desperation equalizer 27 seconds later. The Pack may have outplayed the Devils in both overtime periods, but the 107th minute proved to be Duke's. Nat Eggleston finished off a flick by Brian White from Sean Davis to seal the 3-2 golden goal victory.
FINDLEY'S TAKE
"You're most vulnerable after scoring or giving up a goal," said NC State head coach Kelly Findley, "I think we didn't respond really well in that moment, but it's not from a lack of preparation, or attitude from the guys. I'm proud of their effort tonight. The seniors deserved to go out with a better result."
