Volleyball Falls to No. 21 Duke on Senior Day

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women's volleyball team was defeated by the 21st-ranked Duke Blue Devils Saturday afternoon in Reynolds Coliseum, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-15). The Wolfpack recognized its three seniors, Dariyan Hopper, Alston Kearns and Alesha Wilson prior to their final match.
State concludes the season with a 16-14 overall record and 5-13 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, while Duke finishes the regular season slate at 22-7 and 14-4 in conference action.
Match Rewind
- NC State struggled to get into a rhythm offensively, as the young squad hit .135 for the match. In contrast, No. 21 Duke, the ACC's top offense, recorded an attacking percentage of .388.
- The Wolfpack raced out to an 8-5 lead in the opening set, but the Blue Devils countered with seven unanswered points to take a 12-8 advantage. After trimming the deficit to 19-17, Duke closed out the set on a 6-1 run to win it, 25-18.
- Duke's offense was on fire in the second set, as the Blue Devils tallied a .469 hitting percentage for the frame en route to the 25-15 set win. The Pack rallied late in the frame with a 5-0 run, but the Devils held on.
- In the final set, the score was tightly contested through the first half of the frame with Duke holding a slim 14-12 lead. A couple of runs ensued down the stretch and the Devils claimed another 25-15 set win to clinch the match in straight sets.
Key Performers
- Hopper led the Wolfpack offensively with 12 kills and a .333 attacking percentage, while freshman Julia Brown chipped in with eight kills.
- At the setter position, sophomore Maggie Speaks handed out 23 assists and also collected four digs and three kills.
- Defensively, Hopper paced the squad with nine digs and sophomore Rachel Eppley pitched in with six. Wilson led the Pack in blocks with block assists.
