FREEPORT, Bahamas – The NC State women’s basketball team finished play at the 2014 Junkanoo Jam in fine fashion on Saturday afternoon, pummeling the Texas Tech Lady Raiders by a final score of 75-42 inside St. George’s High School gymnasium.
The Pack (5-2) operated at a season-best 28-58 (.483) from the field, a mark which included a 10-20 (.500) success rate from beyond the arc. NC State held Texas Tech (4-2) to a mere 15-44 (.341) from the field and 5-15 (.333) from distance.
Three Wolfpackers scored in double figures during the victory, with Dominique Wilson’s 16 points leading the way. She was joined in double figures by Krystal Barrett (13 points, 3-4 shooting from distance) and Len’Nique Brown-Hoskin (12 points, 4-4 shooting from distance).
Texas Tech’s Minta Spears led the way offensively for the Lady Raiders, scoring 16 points on 5-6 shooting from the field. NC State got off to a very fast start in the contest, working its way out to a 23-9 advantage when Wilson acrobatically laid one in off the glass with 9:47
to play in the first half. Much of the Pack’s early lead could be attributed to success behind the three-point line, as State drained five early three pointers on its first eight attempts from distance.
As time expired, Brown-Hoskin hit a deep three to give the Pack a 39-19 advantage heading into the halftime break. Seven different Wolfpackers scored points in the opening 20 minutes, with Wilson’s 11 leading the way.
The Pack picked up right where it left off to start the second half, scoring the first four points to extend its lead to 24 (43-19). Texas Tech would get within 19 points when Ivonne CookTaylor scored down low, but this was as close as the Pack would allow the Lady Raiders, extending its lead to as high as 37 points on two occasions before earning the final victory margin of 33.
A number of Wolfpackers had very strong second half performances, as Ashley Eli scored seven points on 3-4 shooting, Kaley Moser was 1-1 from three-point range while recording her first career block, and Chelsea Nelson scored four points on 1-1 shooting and a 2-2 success rate from the free throw line.
NC State will next be in action on Wednesday, Dec. 3 against Minnesota in the 2014 edition of the ACC/B1G Challenge. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Reynolds Coliseum.
