RALEIGH - The NC State men's basketball team is 6-0 for the first time in 10 years after a 60-54 win over Boise State on Friday night.
Ralston Turner led NC State with 14 points. Trevor Lacey added 14 points and six rebounds and four assists. Lacey, Lennard Freeman, Kyle Washington and Cody Martin led the team in rebounding with six boards each. Anthony `Cat' Barber was also in double figures with 10 points.
Come March...: NC State's win over Boise State may be large dividends when tournament resumes are considered in March. Boise State has won 21 games each of the past two seasons and is considered a contender for an NCAA Tournament spot.
Gott Said It: "Well, my first thought is we beat a well-coached, well-disciplined, veteran team that has great poise. I think they are a really good basketball team. I thought our guys kinda hung in there in kind of a quirky game. That was a tough game for our post players, because of the way they play and the way that their post players step away from the basket, and make 3s. We went small and had to adjust the way we traditionally like to play. But I thought our guys did a nice job of hanging in there. They executed our offense late in the game when we had to and got good shots. The small lineup helped us, helped us defend them better and they didn't get as many open looks from the 3-point line, which I thought they got against us when we had our big guys in there. So, you know it was a game that had a lot of...it was like a chess match. Back and forth. A lot of things happening within the game and I thought our guys did a nice job of just hanging in there, fighting through all that and fighting through some fouls, foul calls and trouble. So it ended up being a good win for our team."
Turning Point: With the game tied at 18, NC State went on a 12-0 run over a span of 2:10 to take a 30-18 lead. The run was highlighted by 10 points by Turner, including three made 3-pointers. NC State would not lose the lead for the rest of the game despite a strong offensive push from Boise State near the end of the second half.
Lacey Late: In the final minute of the second half, Lacey scored four points and grabbed a crucial rebound to hold off a Bronco surge. Lacey showed his playmaking abilities with a strong drive in the lane and finishing with a reverse layup. Following a turnover, Lacey was isolated with his defender and drained a 17-foot jumper from the right wing.
Up Next: NC State will go on the road for the first time this season when it plays at Purdue Tuesday, Dec. 2. That game, part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, will be at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
