RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State volleyball team will host two of the top four teams in the current Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) standings this weekend when it welcomes the third-ranked Florida State Seminoles on Friday and the Miami Hurricanes on Sunday.
Sunday’s contest will be broadcast live on Regional Sports Network (RSN), as well as ESPN3/Watch ESPN. Tom Werme (PXP) and Bill Ferguson (Color) will have the call. For a complete list of television affiliates click here.
The Wolfpack enters the weekend with a 13-8 overall record, including a 2-7 mark in the ACC. Florida State remains unbeaten in 2014 with a record of 21-0 and 9-0 in league action to occupy first place, while Miami is 14-6 and fourth in conference play with a record of 7-2.
Last Time Out
NC State split a pair of matches last weekend, dropping a hard-fought 3-2 decision at Virginia before bouncing back on Sunday with a 3-1 home win against Boston College.
Leading The Pack
Freshman middle blocker Kaitlyn Kearney has been the Wolfpack’s top offensive weapon this season, leading the squad with 2.75 kills per set. Dariyan Hopper, a senior outside hitter from Shorewood, Ill., is second on the team with 2.39 kills per set.
At the setter position, junior Tanna Aljoe and sophomore Maggie Speaks have split time with the former handing out 10.27 assists per set and the latter 9.11 aps. Defensively, senior Alston Kearns paces the group with 3.20 digs per set, while sophomore Rachel Eppley is second with 2.56 dps.
Lucky Number Two
In 21 matches played this season, the Wolfpack has won the second set 16 times. The squad has posted a 12-4 record when winning the second set of a match. State has scored 508 points in the second frame, which is the highest of any set for the team.
Defensive Minded
One of the primary focuses for head coach Bryan Bunn’s team is to play good defense. Last season the squad finished the season with the second-best opponent hitting percentage in the ACC and is currently fifth in that category in 2014.
The Wolfpack has limited opponents to a .182 hitting percentage and is 9-0 on the year when keeping opponents below .200 as a team.
Scouting Florida State
Florida State enters the weekend undefeated with a perfect 21-0 mark overall, highlighted by a 9-0 record in ACC play. The Seminoles rank No. 3 in the AVCA Coaches Poll, which is the highest for the program.
The Wolfpack dropped the first matchup between the two teams this season, 3-0, in Tallahassee.
The ‘Noles are led by senior outside hitter Nicole Walch with 4.05 kills per set. Sarah Wickstrom and Hailey Luke have split time at the setter position with the former handing out 6.33 assists per set and the latter 5.05 aps. Senior libero Katie Mosher paces the squad defensively with 4.25 digs per set.
Scouting Miami
The Miami Hurricanes make the trip to North Carolina with a 14-6 record on the season, including a 7-2 mark in conference action. The ‘Canes will face UNC-Chapel Hill on Friday prior to their matchup with the Wolfpack on Sunday.
NC State and Miami met once last season, with the Hurricanes collecting a 3-0 win in Coral Gables, Fla.
Senior outside hitter Savannah Leaf leads the ‘Canes and the ACC in kills per set with 4.70 to her credit. Junior Taylor Scott is second on the team with 2.37 kps. At the setter position, freshman Haley Templeton has dished out 10.85 assists per set and defensively, junior libero Kalysta White paces the group with 3.25 digs per set.
