RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State women’s soccer scored a 2-1 victory over UNC Wilmington behind a pair of goals from Brittany Stanko, Sunday at Dail Soccer Stadium.
Stanko found the back of the net in the 12th minute to put the Wolfpack (5-1) ahead early. Shelli Spamer started the sequence with a long ball to Jennie Krauser. Krauser dished to Stanko, who deposited her second scoring strike of the year into the bottom left corner of the net. Krauser and Spamer each earned assists on the play.
The Seahawks (1-5) evened the score in the 52nd minute. Morgan Leyble played a ball to Lindsey Byrne to record the assist. Byrne teed up her shot from nearly 30 yards out, and buried it in the top left corner of the Wolfpack net.
As time ticked away in regulation, the Pack pushed forward with a barrage of late chances. In the 80th minute, Stanko made the most of one. Spamer again took credit for the assist, a lofted pass to the mouth of the goal. Stanko managed to redirect the pass home with a header for her second goal of the game, third of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Stelljes earned her third win of the year, collecting eight saves on the afternoon.
NC State returns to action on Thursday, September 12, when the Pack hosts Notre Dame to open the Atlantic Coast Conference slate. Streaming coverage of the match will be available on ESPN3.com. Fans can also follow along with Twitter updates from @PackWSoccer or with live stats on GoPack.com.
