Seven Head to NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

RALEIGH, N.C. – A total of seven members of the NC State track and field squad will travel to Eugene, Ore., for the finals of the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 5-8, at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
All four days of competition will be broadcasted live on ESPN3, ESPNU and the Pac-12 Network on the following schedule:
Wednesday, June 5 at 3 p.m. ET – Pac-12 Network
Thursday, June 6 at 2 p.m. ET - Pac-12 Network and 6:50 p.m. ET – ESPN3
Friday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m. ET – ESPNU or ESPN3
Saturday, June 8 at 5 p.m. ET – ESPNU or ESPN3
Condensed replays of the final two days of competition will be aired Sunday, June 9, at 9 and 11 a.m. ET, as well as Monday, June 10, at 1 and 2:30 p.m., both on ESPNU.
Karimah Shepherd, Senior – Women’s Long Jump and Triple Jump
The only Wolfpack athlete to qualify for the final rounds in two different events will be the first participant from NC State to compete when she suits up for Wednesday’s women’s long jump. The 2013 ACC Champion in the long jump and South Region Field Athlete of the Year, Shepherd who owns a season-best mark of 21’ 1.25” (6.43m) in the event, will also compete in Friday’s women’s triple jump final. Shepherd recorded her best mark of the season at the NCAA East Regional with a 42’ 2” (12.85m) leap.
Joanna Thompson, Sophomore – Women’s 10,000 Meters
Making her first appearance in an NCAA final, Thompson will compete in Wednesday’s women’s 10,000-meter run. After finishing fourth in the event at the ACC Championships back in April, Thompson clocked a time of 33:49.22 at the NCAA East Regional to finish in 12th place and qualify for the final. Thompson was also an All-ACC and All-Region cross country runner last fall.
SeQuoia Watkins, Redshirt Freshman – Women’s Discus
Watkins, also making her first NCAA Finals appearance, will compete in Thursday’s women’s discus competition. The Asheville, N.C., native earned All-ACC honors in the event with a season and personal-best 172’ 9” (52.65m) to place second at the ACC Championships. Watkins finished 10th at the NCAA East Regional with a 163’ 9” (49.91m) throw.
Ryan Hill, Redshirt Senior – Men’s 1,500 Meters
A six-time track All-American and three-time cross country All-American, Hill will look to become the second 10-time honoree in program history when he laces up his spikes for the men’s 1,500-meter run. Hill will compete in Thursday’s semifinal race with hopes of advancing to Saturday’s final. The Hickory, N.C., native owns a top time of 3:42.24 this season – set at the Duke Twilight meet on May 5.
Nathaniel Williams, Redshirt Junior – Men’s Discus
Williams, who earned All-America honors after his 13th-place finish in the men’s discus in 2012, hopes to improve upon that performance and add another award to his collection. The Newport, N.C., native owns a season-best mark of 185’ 9” (56.63m) in the event, which he set in a first-place performance at the Duke Invitational on April 6. Williams will compete Friday evening.
Tremanisha Taylor, Redshirt Sophomore – Women’s Shot Put
Taylor will make her second-straight trip to Eugene, Ore., for the final rounds of the NCAA Championships to compete in Saturday’s the women’s shot put competition. An All-ACC performer in the shot put on the outdoor circuit in her first two seasons and the ACC Champion during the indoor season, Taylor had her best throw of the season – a 53’ 5.50” (16.29m) toss – at the ACC Championships to take second place.
Andrew Colley, Redshirt Junior – Men’s 5,000 Meters
A 2013 All-ACC performer in the men’s 5,000-meter run, Colley will make his second-career appearance in the event at the NCAA Finals, and first since the 2011 season where he placed 17th overall. Colley ran a season-best 13:45.69 at Stanford’s Payton Jordan Invitational on April 28, and posted the ninth-best time at the NCAA East Regional with a 14:01.41 clocking.
