RALEIGH, N.C. - After two days of competition, the NC State women’s track & field team stands in second place with 55 points, and sits just four points behind Florida State with one day remaining in the 2013 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Senior jumper Karimah Shepherd, who won the women’s long jump with a school-record 21’ 2.00” (6.45m) mark at the ACC Indoor Championships in February, matched her season-best for the outdoor season with a 21’ 1.25” (6.43m) leap Friday afternoon and became the first women’s long jumper in program history to win the conference title on the outdoor circuit.
"It's an honor," Shepherd said. "It's really exciting. It means a lot to me to win the title at a home meet. That was a great, great long jump competition today. Everyone competed really well. I'm just happy that I was able to pull it out."
Redshirt sophomore Tremanisha Taylor earned her second-straight All-ACC honor in the women’s shot put with a season-best 53’ 5.50” (16.29m) heave. Taylor also finished second at last year’s outdoor championships in the event.
The Wolfpack’s men’s team received an All-ACC performance from senior Brian Himelright in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Himelright made a pass on the final lap to grab third place, stopped the clock at 8:59.60 and earned a place on the podium in the event for the second year in a row.
The men’s team ranks ninth in the team standings with 10 points after the first two days of competition.
In the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, redshirt junior Samantha Norman and senior Erin Mercer recorded top-five finishes for the Wolfpack. Norman clocked a 10:22.51 time to take fourth place, while Mercer was next to cross the finish line at 10:28.79.
NC State will conclude competition at the ACC Championships Sunday, April 20 at Paul Derr Track.
