RALEIGH, N.C. – Reynolds Coliseum, where Jim Valvano first previewed his famous “Never Give Up” speech for the 1993 ESPYs, was the site Monday night for the advanced screening of ESPN’s 30-For-30 film “Survive and Advance,” a retelling of NC State’s 1983 championship season.
Director Jonathan Hock, former Wolfpack standout guard and project executive producer Dereck Whittenburg and the rest of Hock’s New York production team were on hand, along with eight other surviving members of the team and Pam Valvano Strasser, for the showing.
Hundreds of viewers filled the north end zone of the storied gym, including current Wolfpack head coach Mark Gottfried, for the free preview of the movie that will air nationally on the cable sports network on Sunday at 9 p.m.
“It was big-time,” Gottfried said. “It was even better than I thought it was going to be – and I had high expectations.”
