State Volleyball Falls to No. 14 UNC in Home Finale

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State women’s volleyball team concluded the home portion of its schedule with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-20) loss to 14th-ranked North Carolina on Wednesday night in Reynolds Coliseum. State falls to 20-9 overall and 11-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while UNC improves to 24-4 and 13-4 in the ACC.
Senior Brie Merriwether and junior Rachel Buckley led the way for the Wolfpack with eight kills apiece, while junior Dariyan Hopper pitched in with eight. Junior Alston Kearns paced the squad defensively with 16 digs. Sophomore Tanna Aljoe and freshman Maggie Speaks split time at the setter position with Speaks dishing out 17 assists and Aljoe 10.
UNC opened the match by winning the first set, 25-17. The Tar Heels raced out to an 8-3 advantage to start the frame and built on the lead throughout the set.
The Tar Heels increased their lead to 2-0 after winning the second set, 25-14. State opened the set with a service error, but responded with two kills to take the lead, 2-1. UNC scored four unanswered points to take the lead, 5-2. After a kill by Merriwether, another 3-0 run ensued for the Heels and they held the advantage.
In the third set, the Wolfpack started the frame with kills from Hopper and Merriwether as the squad jumped out to a 6-2 lead. State held a 9-6 advantage in the set before the Tar Heels rallied to gain control and ultimately win the frame, 25-20. Buckley led the way for the Pack with four kills in the set and an assisted block.
Up next, the Wolfpack will travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., for a matchup against Pitt on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m.
