HAARLEM, The Netherlands - NC State’s Carlos Rodon earned Man of the Match honors by throwing seven shutout innings, fanning nine, and securing the win in USA’s 1-0 win over The Netherlands, Thursday at Honkbal-Haarlem Baseball Week.
Rodon scattered six hits in the contest at the Dutch team's home stadium, improving his ERA to 1.42 through five appearances and 19.0 innings of work for the collegiate national team this summer. The rising sophomore has allowed three earned in those appearances, striking out 21 while walking only seven.
Trea Turner added one of USA’s three hits on the afternoon, but ended up stranded 90 feet away after stealing third. He finished the game 1-for-4, dropping his average with Team USA to .341, still good for the team lead by .041 points. Turner also leads the squad in runs (16), walks (15), hits (15), stolen bases (10), and OBP (.516).
Rodon was named the game’s most valuable player, and tossed two autographed baseballs into the stands as per the Dutch tradition, throwing both with his right hand after pitching seven innings with his left. He joins Turner as the second Wolfpacker in five tournament games for Team USA to earn the distinction.
USA moves on to the semifinals of the Honkbal tournament, taking part in a four-team tournament set to begin Saturday, July 21. Medal games will be contested on Sunday, July 22.
