RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State head women’s soccer coach Steve Springthorpe has announced the addition of two players – Maryalice McKenna and Michelle Oestreich – to the signing class released back in February, giving the Wolfpack 10 newcomers for the 2012 season.
McKenna (Holliston, Mass./Holliston HS) was named All-Tri Valley League four-consecutive seasons from 2008-11. She helped her club to back-to-back league championships in 2008 and 2009.
McKenna played on the Region I ODP team in 2010-11, and was a member of the New England Eagles Futbol Club (NEFC) for nine seasons.
“She came to our camp and showed toughness and a great work ethic who wants to battle for the ball,” said Springthorpe. “We will probably play her in the midfield, with an emphasis towards being a defensive midfielder.”
She earned 12 varsity letters combined in soccer, basketball, softball, track and lacrosse. McKenna scored 18 goals and had 30 assists in her high school soccer career.
Oestreich is a local product from Raleigh who played at Wakefield High School, and for Capital Area Soccer League (CASL). She scored six goals during her just completed senior season after coming up with 10 goals and 10 assists in 2011 en route to a 16-4-3 record.
“We found a good, solid player with good technique to possess the ball,” explained Springthorpe. “Though she has played some center midfield we will likely play her at center back.
“Michelle also gives our team some size and height that was a theme our coaching staff addressed with this incoming class.”
NC State begins the 2012 season with an exhibition match with William & Mary on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 2 p.m. The home opener will take place the following Sunday against Cincinnati at 1 p.m. All home dates are played at Dail Soccer Field.
