RALEIGH, NC – Rising NC State senior setter Megan Cyr, a two-year starter for the Wolfpack volleyball team since transferring here from Colorado, will spend the next week in Winnipeg, Canada, trying out for one of two Team Canada squads that will represent her native country in international competition over the next several years.
The St. Andrews, Manitoba, native is one of 54 collegiate and postcollegiate players invited to the week-long camp, held at the University of Manitoba in Winnepeg. She will be vying for either a spot on the 18-player Canadian Senior A Team or the 14-player Senior B Team.
The A team will represent Canada later this year at the 2012 Pan American Cup in Juarez, Mexico, from July 4-14. It will also begin training for the 2014 World Championships and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
The Senior B team will represent Canada at the 2013 World University Games in Moscow, Russia.
If selected, Cyr will spend more than a month training with the national team. Selections will be announced at the end of Friday’s final training session.
“I’m extremely excited to get the opportunity to try-out for Team Canada,” Cyr said. “I played on the youth and junior team national team and had the most amazing experiences representing my country.
"I would love the chance to represent Canada while playing a sport I love this summer as well as in the future."
Cyr was a member of the 2006 Canadian Youth national team and a member of the 2008 Canadian Junior national team.
“Playing on Team Canada has always been a dream of mine since I started playing volleyball and I am so fortunate to get the opportunity to try and live those dreams,” Cyr said. “There will be a lot of great athletes at the try-outs and I am looking forward to playing some great high-level volleyball this week.”
In just two seasons at NC State, Cyr has already put her name in the record books. She has played in 235 consecutive games as the Wolfpack’s primary setter. She has 2,425 assists in her two years, which ranks sixth in school history. She has twice posted top-10 single-season totals for the Wolfpack, with 1,133 in her sophomore season and 1,292 in her junior season.
She will return in the fall as one of two seniors for head coach Bryan Bunn’s program, along with Alexa Micek.
Last year, Cyr was instrumental in leading the Wolfpack (20-13) to its best record since 1996 and a school-record eight ACC victories. She not only led the team in assists, she also had the team’s best hitting average (.427), was second in digs (336) and third in blocks (78).
“Megan has been essential in our success over the last two seasons,” Bunn said. “It would be a great opportunity for her to represent her country this summer and to keep her skills sharp playing against high-level competition.
“We wish her well at the tryouts.”
