RALEIGH, N.C. - In its recently completed spring training sessions, the NC State volleyball team saw continued improvement in numerous areas.
"We ended our spring training on a good note, going 7-1 in our final all-day tournament," said third-year NC State coach Bryan Bunn. "We saw lots of improvement throughout the seven weeks of practice. Our overall spring record was for sets was 27-5."
Rising junior middle blocker Brie Merriwether led the team in kills, followed by rising junior Meredith Richardson.
"Starting jobs at all positions are still wide open due to the competitive nature of our practice in the spring," Bunn said. "That's a good thing as we continue to build the program in a way that will allow us to keep moving forward.
"Strong competition is a healthy thing."
In its April tournament, led by an effort by senior Megan Cyr and two other student-athletes, the volleyball team raised more than $300 for the Boys and Girls Club of Wake County.
"We want to thank everyone for their support for this great cause," Bunn said.
The Wolfpack will look to improve on 2011 record-breaking season. The Pack finished 20-13 overall with a school-record eight ACC victories. Departed senior Margaret Salata earned All-ACC honors, while freshman Dariyan Hopper was named to the ACC All-Freshman team.
The Wolfpack will return to drills in early August. It will open the season at a tournament in Charleston, S.C., on Aug. 24-25, followed by back-to-back weekend tournaments at Reynolds Coliseum on Aug. 31-Sept. 1 and Sept. 7-8.
The full schedule will be announced later this month.
