COLLEGE PARK, MD. - No. 13 NC State suffered its first shutout loss of the season, at the hands of Maryland, as the Wolfpack fell 4-0 at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium, Friday night.
Ryan Mathews provided the only Pack hits on the evening, going 2-for-3 with a double down the left field line. The rest of the Wolfpack (20-8, 8-5 ACC) went hitless. Trea Turner and Bryan Adametz each walked once, and Andrew Ciencin was hit by a pitch for State’s only other baserunners. Turner stole second after his walk to improve to an NCAA-leading 29-for-29 on stolen bases, just one shy of NC State's single season record.
Starter Ethan Ogburn (3-2) took the loss after giving up four runs, all earned, on eight hits and one walk, striking out four over seven innings. Ryan Wilkins pitched a hitless eighth in relief.
Maryland’s Jimmy Reed (1-1), making his first career start after serving primarily as the Terrapin closer, fanned eight Wolfpack batters in a shutout effort over eight innings, allowing only two hits and walking two. Korey Wacker moved in from center to pitch the final frame, holding State without a hit. Maryland originally slated Brett Harman as the starter, but Harman scratched just before game time due to injury and could possibly pitch later in the weekend.
After four and a half scoreless innings that saw both teams combine for only four hits, Maryland (20-12, 4-9 ACC) broke through with the game’s first run in the bottom fifth. Aflredo Rodgriguez grounded down the third base line into left for a one-out double, then stole third. Wacker followed with a bunt single to score Rodriguez.
The Terrapins extended the lead to 4-0 on Tim Kiene’s three-run shot to right in the bottom sixth. K.J. Hockaday hit a one-out single through the right side to get things started. Tomo Delp walked behind him to put two on for Kiene, who pulled a 3-1 pitch over the right field fence for his fifth homer of the year.
