CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - NC State (21-24, 3-10 ACC) fell to North Carolina (31-10, 8-3 ACC) twice today in a doubleheader at Anderson Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Wolfpack dropped game one 8-0 in five innings, then was defeated in the second contest by a score of 5-0.
Morgan Peeler surrendered four earned runs off of eight hits in the loss.
Landon Warren paced the Pack at the plate in the loss, going 2-for-3 with two singles.
In the second inning, Caitlin Dent and Leah Jones notched back-to-back base hits, putting two runners on with one out, but the Pack was unable to push a run across. Heading into the bottom of the frame, the contest remained scoreless.
The Pack put two more runners on base in the third, but again was unable to score a run.
North Carolina took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning off of a sacrifice fly by Constance Orr and run scoring first and third play.
Katie Mansilla opened the fifth with an infield single and advanced two second on a fielder's choice by Kirsty Grant. Warren then notched a single to load the bases for Sara Lippard, pinch hitting for Toni Ann Williford. Lippard hit into a fielder's choice, and then Renada Davis grounded into an inning-edning double play.
The Tar Heels extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning off of two hits, then added one more to that advantage thanks to a solo home run by Logan Foulks, her team-leading eighth of the 2012 campaign. Later in the sixth, UNC added another run, making the score 5-0.
In the seventh inning, UNC starter Ashley Bone retired the Wolfpack in order to end the game and preserve the UNC victory, 5-0.
State dropped game one of the doubleheader, falling to UNC 8-0 in five innings.
Freshman Emily Weiman took the loss after surrendering eight runs off of eight hits and walking four Tar Heel batters in four innings of work.
Weiman issued three walks, hit one batter and scattered five hits in the bottom of the first inning, as the Tar Heels batted around and took a 6-0 lead.
Jones was hit by a pitch to lead off the third inning, and Warren notched the Pack's first hit of the day to put runners on first and second with one out. Warren and Grant, pinch running for Jones, then were able to advance a base thanks to a wild pitch by UNC starting pitcher Lori Spingola. Spingola retired the next two Wolfpack batters, though, and heading into the bottom of the third, State still trailed the Tar Heels 6-0.
After the first inning, Weiman settled down and allowed only one hit through the next three frames.
UNC's Haleigh Dickey smashed her seventh home run of the season in the fifth inning, extending the Tar Heel lead to 7-0. UNC put two more runners on in the frame, then Logan Foulks lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score the game-ending run at 8-0.
