RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State's Megan Cyr is looking to make an impact on more than just the Wolfpack volleyball team.
The senior setter from St. Andrews, Manitoba, Canada, also hopes to improve the future of young kids from the Triangle community by raising money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wake County during a benefit volleyball tournament featuring eight area teams in an all-day event at Reynolds Coliseum.
The Wolfpack will be joined by teams from North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Elon, Appalachian State, East Carolina, William and Mary and Lindsey Wilson, with the first matches beginning at 9 a.m. The doors at Reynolds open at 8 a.m. for teams and spectators.
It's the final of four spring tournaments for the Wolfpack, which posted a 20-13 record last season in head coach Bryan Bunn's second year with the team.
Cyr is working with fellow athletes Sterling Lucas, a linebacker on the Belk Bowl-champion football team, and cross country and track runner Allison Hofmann to raise funds during the day of activities.
"This is a project for my nonprofit leadership class that we are all in together," said Cyr, a public speaking and interpersonal communication major. "We are looking to raise $1,000 from the tournament to give to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wake County."
They've made flyers to post around campus, created a Facebook events page and are having banners made for Reynolds Coliseum. There will also be a raffle, a bake sale and a place to accept cash donations on Saturday.
"Our goal is to raise money for the seven clubs around Wake County in order to provide kids in this area the supplies and tools they need for successful futures," Cyr said.
The tournament is the final event in the Wolfpack's seven-week spring training schedule. Bunn is looking to replace All-ACC middle blocker Margaret Salata, outside hitters Luciana Shafer and Becah Fogle and libero Kelly Wood from last year's team. This year's team will have veterans Cyr and Alexa Micek as its only two seniors.
"We have had a very productive spring up to this point," Bunn said. "This is our last tournament and we will be looking for improvement in all the things we've been focusing on the last seven weeks.
"All the young players are getting an idea of what it will take for us to get to the top of the conference. Our leaders are starting to emerge and we will need to continue with our growth during the summer months and pre-season training."
