BATON ROUGE, LA. – Buoyed by Augusta James’s 1-over par 73, No. 23 NC State women’s golf opened the LSU Golf Classic in seventh of 14 teams at par-72, 6,305 yard University Club Friday.
The Wolfpack carded a 20-over 308 as a team on day one, hanging tough with nine teams ranked in the Golfstat top-40. Eighth-ranked LSU holds the lead after one round, firing a 7-over 295 on Friday. The Pack sits within 10 shots of some of the nation’s best, trailing No. 32 TCU by two shots, No. 29 Virginia by four, No. 5 Vanderbilt by six, No. 7 North Carolina by seven, and No. 16 Tennessee by 10. State holds three-shot leads over No. 27 Purdue and No. 38 Kentucky.
James, currently ranked No. 71 in the country, led the way for the Pack with her 73, positioning the freshman in seventh overall and within three shots of the lead. James rallied from 3-over with birdies on the par-3 fifth and par-5 sixth to play the final seven holes of her round 2-under.
Vanderbilt’s Marina Alex, No. 10 in the nation, took the 18-hole lead with her 2-under 70. No. 47 Madelene Sagstrom from LSU finished one shot behind Alex at 1-under. A quartet of golfers, including fourth-ranked Lauren Stratton from Vanderbilt went through Friday even-par.
Ana Menendez managed a 5-over 77 to finish tied for 27th. Brittany Marchand, Amanda Baker, and Vivian Tsui finished tied for 42nd after each shot a 79.
Saturday’s second round is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m., but the Wolfpack won’t start teeing off until 10:10 a.m. Friday’s first round start was delayed for two-hours due to weather. The LSU Golf Classic wraps up with 18 holes Sunday.
