RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State softball looks to get back on track this weekend as the Pack hosts ACC foe Georgia Tech in a three-game conference series. Action begins Saturday, March 31 with a doubleheader at 5 and 7 p.m. State will conclude the series versus the Yellow Jackets with the annual Kay Yow Pink Game Sunday, April 1 at noon at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
Georgia Tech (20-16, 3-3 ACC) notched a victory over in-state foe Kennesaw State in action this week. The Yellow Jackets are lead at the plate by Kelsi Weseman, who owns a .364 batting average and seven home runs in 2012. Junior pitcher Hope Rush has shouldered the majority of the work in the circle for Georgia Tech. In 143.2 innings of work this season, she has notched 13 wins (six shutouts) and put together a 2.34 ERA.
The Wolfpack is coming off of a split at Charlotte on Wednesday, and currently sits at 15-19 (0-5 ACC) on the season. Freshman shortstop Renada Davis leads State offensively with a .319 batting average, and junior Katie Mansilla boasts the greatest number of hits (31) on the squad. Bethaney Wells paces the Pack in the power department, having slugged six home runs and 28 RBI so far this season.
On Saturday, Wolfpack softball legend Shaina Ervin, who currently serves as the Yellow Jackets' pitching coach, will be throwing out the first pitch in game one. Ervin, a 2007 NC State graduate and member of the 2006 ACC Championship squad, was never able to play at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium, which opened up in 2008. She sits at or near the top in many career records at NC State, including wins (55), career ERA (1.81), opponent batting average (.208), appearances (124), shutouts (19) and innings pitched (708).
Sunday will serve as the 2012 Kay Yow Pink Game for the Pack. In addition to the team wearing pink jerseys, there will be an auction taking place with all proceeds benefitting breast cancer. All fans are encouraged not only to attend and wear pink, but participate in the silent auction.
