RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State senior setter Megan Cyr is one of 13 ACC volleyball players named to the 2012 All-East Region Team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, as announced today by the AVCA.
Cyr, a native of St. Andrews, Manitoba, led the Wolfpack in assists for the third season in a row, compiling 1,234 during the Pack’s record-breaking 22-10 season, which concluded on Thursday with a loss to Texas A&M in the first round of the NCAA Championship in Austin, Texas.
An All-ACC selection, Cyr also led the Wolfpack with a .339 attack average on the season, with 110 kills. She also added 86 blocks, 284 digs and 19 service aces for the team, which finished tied for fourth in the ACC with a 12-8 record, its first winning season in conference play since 1988.
“Megan not only did a great job as a setter, she was a great team leader, along with our other senior, Alexa Micek,” said third-year head coach Bryan Bunn. “They both did a great job of establishing the culture of hard work and preparation in our program.”
Cyr never missed a point in her three years with the Wolfpack, after transferring to Raleigh from Colorado. She became just the second player in school history to record at least 1,000 assists in three consecutive seasons.
In addition to the 13 players who were named to the all-district team, four additional ACC players garnered honorable mention accolades, Miami’s Nicole Lantagne Welch was named the East Region Coach of the Year, and North Carolina’s Paige Neuenfeldt was honored as the East Region Freshman of the Year.
Lantagne Welch, who was also named the ACC Coach of the Year, led the Hurricanes to a 25-6 record after losing four starters from the 2011 squad. Miami finished with a 17-3 mark in conference play, good for sole possession of second place in the ACC. This is her second AVCA East Region Coach of the Year recognition and first since 2008.
Seven ACC schools had student-athletes on the All-East Region, led by Miami with four recognitions. Florida State had three honored, followed by North Carolina with two and Clemson, NC State, Duke, and Georgia Tech with one apiece.
