MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – NC State gymnastics earned top billing in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League 2012 preseason poll. The Wolfpack claimed two first place votes to take the number one spot, while defending champion North Carolina slotted second and West Virginia came in third.
Votes were cast by the league’s eight head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own team.
The Wolfpack earned 42 points a year after spending the entire season ranked inside the national top-25. NC State looks for its first EAGL crown since 2009 this season. Sophomore Stephanie Ouellette returns to lead State, coming off of a rookie campaign that saw her qualify for the NCAA Championships as an all-arounder.
The Tar Heels came two points shy of NC State with 40, while the Mountaineers trailed UNC by the same margin at 38. Maryland (34 points) and New Hampshire (31 points) round out the top five, with the Wildcats securing the final first-place vote. Pitt (16 points), Rutgers (14 points) and George Washington (9 points) were ranked sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
The 2012 season opens this weekend as the Pack hosts Florida on Friday, January 6 at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum. Pitt will host the 2012 EAGL Championship on Saturday, March 24, at 2 p.m., at Fitzgerald Field House, in Pittsburgh, Pa. NCAA Regional Championships will be held on April 7 at six different locations, while the 2012 NCAA National Championships will be held April 20-22, in Duluth, Ga.
